Here is a simple pattern that will make a beautiful tomato.
This pattern can be used as a template for any size round object or body plan. Add more rows like 6-8 to make it more oval shaped. Repeat or omit rows from the patter in rows 3-5 to make the object larger or smaller. It is the perfect canvas for embellishment.
Tomato:
Row 1: Chain 6, slip stitch (st) in the first chain (Fig 1).
Row 2: 2 single crochet (sc) in each chain of the round (Figs 2 and 3). 12 stitches.
Row 3: [1 sc, 2 sc in the next sc] repeat 6 times. 18 stitches.
Row 4: [2 sc, 2 sc in the next sc] repeat 6 times. 24 stitches.
Row 5: [3 sc, 2 sc in the next sc] repeat 6 times (Fig 4). 30 stitches.
Row 6: 1 sc in each sc of the round. 30 stitches.
Row 7: 1 sc in each sc of the round. 30 stitches.
Row 8: 1 sc in each sc of the round (Fig 5). 30 stitches.
Row 7: [3 sc, crochet 2 together (cr2tog)] repeat 6 times. 24 stitches.
Row 8: [2 sc, cr2tog] repeat 6 times. 18 stitches.
Row 9: [1 sc, cr2tog] repeat 6 times. 12 stitches.
Stuff the tomato.
Row 10: [cr2tog] repeat 6 times. st in the next sc. Tie off (Fig 6). 6 stitches.
Leaf:
Row 1: Chain 2. Turn.
Row 2: 2 sc in the second chain from the hook. 1 st. Turn. 2 stitches.
Row 3: 2 sc in each sc. 1 st. Turn. 4 stitches.
Row 4: 2 sc in the first sc, sc in the next 2 sc. 2 sc in the last sc. 1 st. Turn. 6 stitches.
Row 5: 1 sc in each sc. 1 st. Turn. 6 stitches.
Row 6: 1 sc in each sc. 1 st. Turn. 6 stitches.
Row 7: 1 sc in each sc. 1 st. Turn. 6 stitches.
Row 8: cr2tog, sc in the next 2 sc, cr2tog. 1 st. Turn. 4 stitches.
Row 9: [cr2tog] repeat 2 times. 1 st. Turn. 2 stitches.
Row 10: cr2tog, 1st (Fig 7). 1 stitch.
Attaching the Leaf and Stem:
Row 1: Through one of the sides of the sc making the last round on the underside of the tomato, pull the string through with the crochet hook and sc (Fig 8). Continue 1 sc in each sc side of the round (Fig 9). 6 stitches.
Row 2: 1 sc in each sc of the round. 6 stitches.
Row 3: 1 sc in each sc of the round. 6 stitches.
Row 4: 1 sc in each sc of the round. st in the next sc. Tie off. 6 stitches.
Weave the ends of the strings into the leaf and tomato (Fig 10).
