Art Deco Sunburst Shawl

Until this week, summer here in Denmark has been rather cool, much colder than I am used to from California. I started making this shawl when the weather started to turn nice, but evenings were still too cool to wear sleeveless tops and dresses.

The pattern is based off the stained glass window in the council chambers of the Buffalo City Hall in New York. I have always been drawn to the geometric representations of nature in art deco designs. The sunburst of this stained glass window seemed like the perfect inspiration to adapt into a crochet design.

The shawl was made with 200g (800m) of a silk/merino wool blend and a 3.5 (E) mm hook. After blocking, it measures about 56 inches long and 28 inches wide.

Cluster(sts) = stitch the indicated stitches in the parentheses, keeping the last loop on the hook until all stitches are complete, then yarn over and pull through all loops on the hook.
Sometimes the stitches to cluster are not adjacent and are noted in the pattern (for example: "cluster(2 tc) over the next 2 ch-spaces" means to stitch a tc in each of the next two ch-sps, keeping the last loop on the hook, then yarn over and pull through both loops).

Here is a high resolution stitch diagram for the shawl.

I have also broken the diagram into two parts to make it easier to read:
Part 1: Rows 1-37
Part 2: Rows 32-56 plus the border
The ribbing Rows 32-37 are repeated on both partial diagrams to help align your stitches.

Pattern corrections made 11 August 2014.

Border:
Row 1:  Ch, sc 4, (sc, ch) in each ch-sp and hdc in each dtc point across.
Row 2:  3 sc in the corner, (sc, ch) 3 times in the side of each tc, sc in the side of each sc, 2 sc in the side of each hdc and dc around to the last row. sc 2 in the other corner, sl st 2.
   Tie off. Weave ends in.

Block the shawl by stretching it starting at the center and slowly working outwards. Each section should make a semi-circle. I use a measuring tape to keep the shawl symmetric. Finish by stretching out the points created in the last row before the border.

  1. Love this pattern. I was wondering what to start next!

Now all I have to work out is what yarn from my stash would go best with this design........

  2. This is a lovely shawl and one I am sure to make. Love Art Deco designs! Hope you enjoy your stay in Denmark. You will find many who crochet there I am sure. Dorthy

  4. Has anyone actually made it past row 19? I try to move on to row 20 and the instructions for what needs to be done in the chain spaces didn't match up. So I went through and reworked row 19 and continued on until I came across the same problem with row 23 instructions not matching row 22 chain spaces. It's there an updated pattern or a complete chart?

    1. Thank you Jennifer for pointing this out. I have just double checked the pattern and updated it with corrections.

The diagram is correct but, as you have pointed out, not helpful unless it is full for this section of the shawl because of the asymmetry. I will work on that now.

      Sorry about that!

    2. Huh, I just lost my reply. More than happy to point this out as I think this is one of the most beautiful shawl pieces ever and am excited to make several! Thank you so much for the updates, I'm going to get back to work on it as soon as the laundry gets moved to the dryer! :D

  5. Finished! Row 25 needs to be worked using the chart as the instructions don't quite match up and row 49 doesn't work with row 48 or I made a mistake that I couldn't find. At that point anything is possible! This is a beautiful piece, but I think I have a love/hate relationship with it. :D

    1. I am happy that you finished it but sorry that you met so much resistance! I checked over the pattern and diagram again and made a couple clarifications. Thank you for pointing out the errors for me! I hope that you are, at least, happy with the finished shawl!

  9. I've gotten up to row 33, but 64 of [ch4, skip 3, sc in next] puts the last sc in the first of the final sc 4. What am I missing?

    1. Hmmm, I'm not sure. Do you have 12 ch-5 loops at the top of each "triangle" between "petals" (the 3rd pic in Fig. 4) in Row 31? Then in Row 33, do you have a sc in the center of the outer two sets of 5 tc (from Row 31), and 2 sc on the edges of the middle set of 5 tc?

Here is a detail of the top of a set of 5 tc: https://www.flickr.com/photos/suviscrochet/14996136202/

    2. It seems as though you have missed 2 sc somewhere. If you can't find the mistake, you can add those 2 sc back in at Row 37, one in the first ch-4 loop and one in the last ch-2 loop.

You would adjust the pattern as follows:

Rows 33, 35: Ch, sc 4, [ch 4, skip 3 sts, sc] repeat 64 times,
      sc 4.
Rows 34, 36: Ch, sc 4, ch 2, sc in the next ch-sp, [ch 4, sc in the next ch-sp] repeat 63 times, ch 2, sc 4.
Row 37: Ch, sc 4, 2 sc in the ch-2 sp, 4 sc in each ch-sp across, 2 sc in the ch-2 sp, sc 4.

    3. I have one stitch in the middle of the center and the other two are slightly off center. I even turned to math. I have 4 sets of 12 loops with 5 sc each and 3 sets of 5 tc. which comes to 255 sc ignoring the 4 at the beginning and end. 64 * 4 = 256. Am I wrong somewhere? Last resort I'll redo row 32.

    4. I think I figured it out, after staring at your picture. Row 31 shouldn't have a cluster, it should just be TC 6.

    5. I am loving this pattern, but I just came across this same problem. As written, row 32 is symmetrical and the total number of stitches (excluding the edges) is 255. (4 groups of 12 5-ch spaces and three triangles with 5 sc each).

Each repeat in row 33 uses 4 stitched (1 sc and 3 skipped), which 4x64 = 256, so the last one would go into the edge at the end, as Katie said.

Thank you for posting the fix! I doubt anyone will notice, so I'm just going to add them back sneakily as instructed. And thank you for making this pattern, it's one of the most beautiful I've seen!

    1. Thank you, Leah! I used a light fingering weight yarn (200g/800m, silk/merino wool blend). The yarn was made by Silkbloom, a Danish yarn company.
